Here is another in the "Homeless Outside My Window" series.
This one is fantastic!
The harmonica player in the wheelchair will only play if no one is around.
I've seen him do it only once before.
I was lucky to catch him on tape late one night.
He is really great!
Lets get him a job!

Behind Chris Daly's Bar part 2
The continuing saga of Stevenson and Brady alley, behind Chris Daly's bar. This one is more recent and has a one legged homeless harmonica player playing a tune, then asking for a 5 dollar hit so he can shove it up his nose

Danny Glover supports Haight Ashbury Recycling Center
This Bluoz author actually worked at the HANC recycling center almost 20 years ago smashing glass by hand...I think I was the last person to do it before Cal-Osha banned it. Ed Dunn was my boss back then too (his father started it in the 70's) The recycling center has been evicted, but there is still a chance it can be saved....Press release below details an upcoming Board of Supervisors meeting, Februrary 14th, 2011
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
HANC Fights Eviction Picks Up Key Support Local Democratic Party, Park Activists, Hollywood Actor Say “Keep itâ€
The Haight-Ashbury Neighborhood Council Recycling Center and Native Plant Nursery has picked up more significant support in its fight to rescind its eviction by the General Manager of the Recreation and Parks Department.
The local Democratic Party Central Committee voted overwhelmingly in favor of keeping the Recycling Center at its January 26th meeting. The 33 member body counted only two no votes against the resolution coming from the proxies for Scott Wiener and Gavin Newsom.
The Parks and Open Space Advisory Committee voted 9-4 in favor of a pro- HANC resolution at its January 4th meeting.
Haight Ashbury resident and Hollywood celebrity Danny Glover declared his support in a short video captured by one of the HANC staff after a recent visit to the Recycling Center. The clip can be viewed here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l09tUCChOiA
HANC is urging its supporters to turn out to the February 14th Board of Supervisors’ Committee on Operations and Neighborhood Services hearing. “Come show your love for HANC this Valentines Dayâ€, says HANC’s Executive Director Ed Dunn, “if you can’t make it send them a card, or maybe even flowers, I mean native plants!â€.

The Tenderloin at Night 1899
The Tenderloin at Night by Thomas Edison in 1899 is probably the first exploitation movie of all time. Police, prostitution. alcohol, crime, it's all there in San Francisco's own Tenderloin neighborhood
The film was actually made in West orange, New jersey, but it depicts the Tenderloin in San Francisco 112 years ago
IMDB review
Library of Congress database
Youtube poster claims it's New York's tenderloin, but I'm sticking with the Library of Congress on this one....

It Crawled From the Vault #31
One contribution since radio station KUSF was sold recently and in support of the effort to Save KUSF (facebook)
from 1991-1996, KUSF hosted a Sunday show called Jive Radio, which had the original DJ's from KSAN radio, the original underground radio station in the USA. These DJ's and the radio station are now part of the Bay Area Radio Hall of Fame. These are the people that broke the San Francisco sound back in the 60's and 70's and put San Francisco on the international music scene
The Jive Radio website has a few clips but it's almost impossible now to hear a complete show, or anything more than a few minutes, except for the Bay Area Radio Hall of Fame
I recorded a few of these revival shows in the 90's and this one is from October 29, 1995, recorded directly off the airwaves of KUSF (jive radio) onto cassette. This show is hosted by Bobby Dale who died in 2001
This is what underground radio in San Francisco used to sound like, even a commercial station like KSAN..It was the first radio station to have 'free form' radio without any set list.....no kidding.....These DJ's and KSAN spawned an entire generation of underground radio, including KUSF (and even bootleg tapes), which is becoming so rare these days, hardly anyone remembers what it sounded like..I grew up on KSAN...This really is what KSAN used to sound like back in the 70's....enjoy

new water refilling stations in San Francisco
from the San Francisco Water Department
San Francisco, CA – San Francisco Department of the Environment (SFE) and San Francisco Public Utilities Commission (SFPUC) officials today announced new tap water partnerships as part of the City's efforts to promote "on the go" access to San Francisco's great tasting Hetch Hetchy tap water while reducing waste from use of plastic bottled water. In 2007, Mayor Gavin Newsom barred the use of City tax dollars for the purchase of bottled water. The demand for bottled water puts a strain on our environment and resources and bottled water can cost as much as 1,000 times more than tap water.
In Yerba Buena Gardens, SFE Director Jared Blumenfeld and others unveiled the pilot water refilling station from GlobalTap, an international provider of new and innovative clean drinking water refilling stations. Following the pilot installation, SFPUC and SFE officials hope to install additional stations throughout San Francisco in 2010.
"San Francisco has been a leader in educating people about the negative impacts of bottled water," said Blumenfeld. "Today we are honored to be the first U.S. city to host a GlobalTap filling station. Now San Franciscans can 'BYOB' (Bring Your Own Bottle) every day."
Daniel Whitman, founder of GlobalTap, is proud that the City and County of San Francisco chose to partner with GlobalTap. "We want to be a key player in San Francisco's plan to implement a city-wide program in public areas for people to easily access clean and refreshing Hetch Hetchy tap water. Clean water is a human right and not a privilege."
"I support Mayor Newsom's efforts to make San Francisco a model for green initiatives such as the Global Tap Pilot Project," says Fred Blackwell of the San Francisco Redevelopment Agency, property owner of Yerba Buena Gardens.
The City also announced its partnership with TapIt, a New York-based organization that has assembled a network of cafes, restaurants and other businesses throughout San Francisco where people on-the-go can refill their water bottle. People can access the network of participating businesses through the use of TapIt’s search and mapping features on their personal computers, Smartphones or by downloading the TapIt Water iPhone application from the Apple Store.
"San Francisco has the best tap water in the world," said Laura Spanjian, SFPUC Assistant General Manager for External Affairs. "Our partnerships with TapIt and GlobalTap will make it easier for everyone to enjoy our great-tasting Hetch Hetchy tap water and reduce waste from all those plastic bottles."
"We're very happy to have a partnership with the City and County of San Francisco. We believe TapIt can help San Francisco promote its high quality tap water while furthering its goals to reduce landfill waste," said Kylie Harper, TapIt Founder.
"Mixt Greens is glad to be a part of the Tapit's innovative water refilling network, along with other City businesses, in providing Hetch Hetchy’s high quality tasting tap water to San Franciscans while they are on the go," said Tony Alcala of Mixt Greens, a participating TapIt business.
SFPUC and SFE officials will work with GlobalTap and TapIt in coming months to install new refilling stations and expand the network of participating TapIt businesses.
For more information about the GLOBALTAP pilot and how to set up GLOBALTAP in your community, contact GLOBALTAP at 1-312-850-1110, go to www.globaltap.org or email at info@globaltap.org
TapIt is a water bottle refill network started in New York City. Since it's founding, TapIt has expanded to include more than 250 refill locations in New York, 80 in San Francisco, with a total of over 400 partners in 10 states. For more information or to find out how to bring TapIt to your community, go to www.TapItWater.com or email info@TapItWater.com. For press inquiries email pr@TapItWater.com"

behind Chris Daly's bar
this video was posted recently and the location is Stevenson near Brady (off Gough), or right behind Buck tavern, Chris Daly's new bar. The poster describes this as The New Tenderloin
This video was shot in the last month of 2010 and the first month of 2011 in San Francisco, as the city declines.
My neighborhood took a wicked dive and is now known as TNT: The New Tenderloin.
The video shows two of the regular young drunks that have turned up on Stevenson St. every single night.
They huddle in a patch of darkness not lit by any security or street lamp. They get drunk, get loud and want to involve everyone in their drama.
See it for yourself.

Clear Cutting On Yerba Buena Island For Condos & Hotels?
this video shows what could be the beginning of clear cutting the trees on Yerba Buena island in the middle of San Francisco bay
from H brown
and then somebody contacted Eric Mar about it
which prompted another response from H
from H brown
update - january 18, 2011
boys and girls,
Tomorrow (Wednesday, January 19th 2011) the
John Stewart Company contractors will begin major
logging of the forest on Yerba Buena Island. Here
is the notice given residents.
They claim they need no permits because the
trees (many are magnificent 100 plus year old
Monterey pine)are not native. In fact, they
are clearing views for the development planned
atop the hill which is presently sealed off from
prying cameras such as Tony De Renzo and I took
up there last week.
Some of you (such as Will Kane and the Chronicle)
could stop this if you wanted. Just one TV crew
led by Dan Noyes would halt the destruction.
Will you act?
I've done all that I can. Stewart says they need
no City permission because technically, since the
developer (Lennar - surprised?) hasn't yet made a
payment to the Navy to change official ownership
and the Navy doesn't give a shit what happens to
the trees.
You may need a helicopter to film this because the
security around the site is heavy now.
What a fucking travesty.
h.
---------resident advisory for Treasure island----------
Dear Residents:
This e-mail is being sent for informational purposes only.
Please see below for the Resident Advisory notice:
In an-going effort to improve the quality of life on
Treasure Island, a vegetation management project on Yerba Buena Island has begun.
The project includes pruning and removing of specific
trees on Yerba Buena Island. The project will begin Monday, January 10, 2011 and will
end Tuesday, March 1, 2011 and will be completed in five phases. Weather conditions
may affect this schedule. Work will start daily at approximately 8:00 am and finish at
approximately 4:30 pm.
Phase two has begun.
On Wednesday January the 19th and Thursday the 20th, 2011
street lights along Treasure Island Road (The Causeway) will be out. Caution should be
observed while driving along this route. Also, the posted speed limit of 25
miles per hour should be strictly observed.
This is a significant project that will require the use
of heavy equipment. Access along Treasure Island Road (The Causeway) will be reduced to
one lane at various times throughout the project. Expect
general construction related noise, debris, and delays.
Additional notices will be sent as the project progresses
and work locations change.
Please be advised the indicated work areas are hazardous.
Individuals should remain clear of the areas at all time.
If you have questions, please call us at (415) 834-0211.
Office hours are Monday through Friday 8:30 am until 5:00 pm; Thursday until 7:00 pm.
We appreciate your cooperation
this quote and below are originally from January 11, 2011
boys and girls,
And, Will Kane. Here's the tape Tony and
I did on Yerba Buena Island today. Keep in
mind that you need a permit to take down a tree
anywhere in the City. Is this a rogue operation?
I don't have a tall soap box. Others of you do
and I'll share my info with any of you.
Dig the video from this morning.
Which is as far as we'll take it.
Other than maybe go do a picnic or two there and
watch them cut down the forest. It's a great
view from that hill.
And, getting better, what with all the trees dropping.
h.
and then somebody contacted Eric Mar about it
contacted eric mar, whose aide got back to me and found out it's (supposedly)
all on the up and up w/ the input of an arborist--to cut down unhealthy
trees...and it's on federal land so no city input necessary. i hope that's a
true assessment.
daniele
which prompted another response from H
This just in,
No, sorry Daniele but what I hear is that there
is a plan to build a hotel on top of the hill and
that the trees would block the 'world class' view
for tourists. Tony and I walked the whole side of
the mountain and got lots of good shots of perfectly
healthy old growth trees that have been spray painted
for removal because they're in the way of the view.
Don't believe their bullshit.
