San Francisco originated the bike protest 'critical mass' in 1992, and September 2012 is the 20th anniversary ride
But the very first mass bike protest in San Francisco was almost 100 years earlier on July 25, 1896. This was published in the San francisco Call, July 26, 1896 and can be viewed at the Library of Congress
There's also a nice write up at The Great Bicycle Protest of 1896 (PDF) and is during the great bicycle craze of 1896

Stern Grove - The Family Stone
Sometimes it's better if other people do it with Stern Grove because this is one of those San Francisco concert series that requires you to get there very early for a good spot. As in 6 hours or more before the show
So here is another San Francisco original band, the Family Stone --- Sly and the Family Stone history - Wikipedia
As far as anyone knows, Sly is still putting around his LA house in his pink bunny wabbit slippers
The Family Stone, Stern Grove, June 24, 2012 courtesy of donaldbowehr

6th street rooftop ladder yoga
May 12, 2006, 6th Street, San Francisco
It's 6 years later but posted for the first time, this is a video of a previously undocumented type of yoga known as 'rooftop ladder yoga'. Benefits of this type of yoga include a free 72 hour health checkup, with VIP priority transportation, and personalized meetings with people in white coats and clip boards

The hidden rooftop art at 1019 Market
The Mid Market art work you've never seen before because it's all on the roof at 1017 - 1019 Market and none of it is viewable from the street and it's not publicly accessible. There's a chance this artwork my be painted over as 1019 market has been for sale for some time now. All of this artwork was done with the permission and blessing of the owner, Robert Herztein who is himself an artist and has artwork for sale on Artspans website. Any inquiries about his art or the building itself can be done there as both his phone and email are up and working . Robert is also looking for some website help for his artwork
this is also now posted on Curbed
This is the roof top of 1019 Market facing north across market. You can see the top of the Golden Gate Theater and the Hilton tower on the right

Three local artists, Apex, Mona Caron and Chor Boogie have done pieces up here. All three have done numerous public displays around San Francisco so you've probably seen their work before

It Crawled From the vault #47
San Francisco rock legends Moby Grape, June 30, 1996, Maritime Hall, San Francisco, soundboard > cassette, appr 1 hour 26 minutes
some parts of this were previously on a compilation sent out years ago via Moby Grape mailing list, but this is much more of the complete show. There's also a nice archived review of this show
http://www52.zippyshare.com/v/60602583/file.html
Maritime Hall is across the street from One Rincon hill. It has quite a story as a concert hall from 1995-2001 and is one of the reasons why we have an Entertainment Commission today, instead of it being solely a police issue
The opening song, Hey Grandma, written in 1967, mentions Fillmore Slim - lyrics

Central Market CBD Community Guide April 2012 report
The Central Market CBD community guides are the people who walk up and down Mid Market all day long and engage the public. Along with city workers, Muni drivers, and people who live and work in the area, these are the people to talk to if you want to find out what Mid Market is really like. The Community guides do monthly service reports in PDF with photos and diagrams of everything they encounter
The latest uploaded report is April 2012 (PDF)
This report includes possibly the most disturbing graffiti you'll ever see, "I heart Kenny G". Proof that this neighborhood is not safe! (some explanation) Those poor community guides need a raise because some things cannot be unseen

Tenderloin drug deals and Barah's market update
MJ Isebell's latest video of what she says are drug dealers in the Tenderloin. This includes the 200 block of Turk, which is 1 block from Mid Market. It also includes updated drug dealing at Barah's Market at 200 Leavenworth long after the San Francisco city attorney sued, then won an injunction with strict orders to abate the nuisance
from the city attorney page
She says in the video that nothing has changed since the injunction
It looks like the city attorney is being ignored completely here.

Well, it made for a good photo op and press release anyway

from the city attorney page
The Court also issued a strict injunction against Barah's Market and ordered the store to discontinue “public nuisance” activities, including the sale, storage or distribution of illegal drugs. Barah's will no longer be able to stay open after midnight, must have a security guard in the evening and surveillance video cameras both inside and outside the store.

Mid Market Muni Meltdown
The great Mid market revitalization continues between 5th and 6th. This is across the street from Zendesk and Zoost and Benchmark Capital just moved in at the Warfield and the upcoming City Place is bound to revitalize the area for sure this time. SFCITI will probably have an app soon which will turn Mid Market into the ultimate avenue of docile contentment. Twitter just moved in 3 blocks up the street and would like to meet it's new neighbors and "understand where the brightest hopes and toughest challenges are rooted"
Well welcome to the neighborhood Twitter, via The Tens and SF Citizen, Uptown Almanac and SFist(in the arts and entertainment section (!)) and all over Twitter and Tumblr and I'd Rather Die blog and reddit
update - Market Street Railway - the official blog of this streetcar itself has now posted a story on this incident
And, after rolling around the blogs all day, it's now an actual copyrighted news item ooooh
Bonus: getting some quality graffiti time in the middle of it
update, the video went viral with 10,000 views in 24 hours, and the uploader is very busy now in the comments there
youtube link
If you think this is unusual for Mid Market, think again. I'm guessing this is not mentioned in the real estate brochures
As we mentioned in our last post, Market Street Railway is committed to working with SFMTA to improve safety for F-line streetcars, operators, and passengers along the line, especially in mid-Market. We’re also committed to helping the Mayor’s economic revitalization plans for the area by showcasing the F-line streetcars as an efficient, attractive transit connection to attractions in both directions.
But as anyone knows who has tried to walk mid-Market Street in broad daylight, let alone nighttime, scenes like this have to become less common for the area to reach the goals the mayor has set for it.
We admit it: we were too PC (politically correct) in our earlier post, where we lumped in folks like this with those immersed in their own cellphone or earbud worlds as “people who are disoriented or distracted in one way or another.” The cellphone and earbud crowd can indeed endanger themselves, and vehicles, by obliviously stepping into traffic when they shouldn’t, but that’s nothing compared to people who seemingly have no idea where they are or what they’re doing. And in this video, we have two such, fighting each other, with a jerk tagger on top of it. All in broad daylight on Market Street.
Seeing this video reminded me of a personal experience a few weeks ago that I had chosen to ignore: walking to a meeting at SFMTA headquarters and being verbally threatened out of nowhere by a man at Tenth and Market who followed me up the street screaming the most personal kinds of profanities and waving his fists. Again, not an uncommon sight on mid-Market.
If this sort of thing isn’t somehow addressed, the current realities of mid-Market may be its future realities, no matter how much effort property owners and the Mayor’s Office make.
And, after rolling around the blogs all day, it's now an actual copyrighted news item ooooh
Bonus: getting some quality graffiti time in the middle of it

Haight Ashbury Street Fair 2012 - The Tubes
The Tubes, live at the Haight Ashbury Street Fair, June 10, 2012
recorded with out of print old school mics that can handle the 120db+ just 20 feet away from the stage--they don't make em anymore! Recorded digitally in dvd quality at 24 bit/96 khz, direct to mp3 at 320+ kb/s, about 87 minutes
updated June 17, 2012. Finally a pretty good EQ. Apparently most of the previous EQ had some phase shift at some frequencies which makes it sound funny. This new one is pure parametric EQ and no phase shift. All of the previous attempts are at the bottom of this post for comparison
the.tubes.6.10.2012.haight.street.fair.mp3
http://www38.zippyshare.com/v/67526679/file.html
The Tubes are one of the best San Francisco bands, and since they don't play SF much more than every 10 years, it's important to try and get it right
the original recording to compare the difference. This was recorded purposely with bass rolloff to avoid overloading inputs. The crowd was also packed with people shoving their way through, so it gets jostled a bit
